The Kings and Queen of Comedy Asia!

24 Oct

Tonight I caught the very first all star gathering of stand up comedians from Asia! It was not an event to be missed, as I love stand up comedy, and have been dieing to catch a comedy act like this in Malaysia since forever! And I can honestly say, after tonight, it was worth every single Ringgit for those tickets. All RM198.oo of them. Gold Class baby, center view. =D

And when I say all star cast, I mean ALL STAR! Count them, the host Queen Kumar, the Singaporean cross dresser with so much wit, he\she will cut the boredom right out of you and fill you with laughs. Vir Das, an extremely accomplished Indian comedian with a British accent who can both tickle you to death and make you want even more of it, Hung Le, who is from Vietnam but raised and grown in Australia, who has stories so unique, you’ll feel just at home with him and our two local heroes, Douglas Lim from the well known “Kopitiam” series and Harith Iskandar the Malaysian Man of Entertainment and Comedy.

I went with Yinyee, a good friend of mine, as laughing alone is fine, but laughing with friends is better. We both went in expecting a good time and I was giddy with excitement watching the clock move ever so much closer to showtime. And when the lights dimmed, and Kumar sashayed out ever so elegantly, I knew right there and then, it was going to an amazing show.

Sure enough it was! Every second each performer was on stage, there was a joke being told that literally knocked the wind out of me. The timing, the execution and the mannerisms, expressions, all of it, were spot on and immensely priceless! I loved every single one of them. Douglas, I have seen once, perform live, a very small skit, but tonight he was amazing. Vir Das, was a great surprise for me! I have never seen him before, but he was awesome!! His jokes and his expressions especially were so fantastic, I couldn’t breath through his jokes! Hung Le had a much cruder take on comedy, but the stories he shares have so much in common with ourselves it was impossible not to relate and laugh aloud. And finally the King Pin, Mr.Harith Iskandar, decked in his all white suit, strode out and absolutely killed the crowd of 5000 people with his true to heart and undeniable jokes on Malaysian life and his daily observations! Most amazing was his CSI joke with Malaysian flavor added. He made me laugh so hard, I cried.

It was an a amazing night, and one that I will never  ever forget. I’m keeping the ticket stub as memory and will forever mark this as the day my dream came true, to see stand up comedy grow in Malaysia to the point where we can freely enjoy the humour and share the ups and downs of daily life with lots of laughs. I have always loved stand up comedy, ever since the first day I saw and heard it. My take on it, is that one day, when we achieve the rational minds and open ideas, I too, could one day, perhaps take the stage myself and share my stories. Maybe. Just maybe, share the light with these special individuals who bring joy to the world in their own special way.

As it is said, “Happiness is real when it’s shared.” And I wholeheartedly agree! Hope you had fun.
